Cmobile NBN Fibre To The Node (FTTN) explained
Cmobile NBN Fibre To The Node (FTTN) explained
All types of nbn™ broadband access network connections that utilise a physical line running to the premises are considered Fixed Line connections. An nbn™ Fibre to the Node (FTTN) connection is utilised where the existing copper phone and internet network from a nearby fibre node is used to make the final part of the connection to the nbn™ access network. The fibre node is likely to take the form of a street cabinet. Each street cabinet will allow the nbn™ access network signal to travel over a fibre optic line from the exchange, to the cabinet, and connect with the existing copper network to reach your premises.
Setting up your equipment
To prepare for your new nbn™ powered plan, simply set up your VDSL2 compatible modem using the instructions below. If you already have a modem, it must be VDSL2 compatible for it to work over the nbn™ access network. If you don’t have a modem, Cmobile can sell you one outright.
- Locate the telephone wall socket in your home. This will be the connection to your modem.
- Ensure that you don’t have anything else plugged into your wall socket such as a telephone or fax machine as this will impact the service.
- Plug the grey telephone cable that normally comes with your VDSL modem into wall socket and the DSL/VDSL port on the back of your modem.
- Plug in the modems power supply to the power outlet on the wall and turn it on.
- You should now see the DSL light on the modem turn solid. This may take up to 15 minutes to connect. Do not turn off the modem power during this time.
- If the DSL light on your modem does not turn solid after 15 minutes, check to see if the telephone cable is correctly clicked in to both the wall socket and the modem. If that is OK, check if there is another wall socket in the house and connect the modem to this socket and try again, waiting another 15 minutes. If you are still having problems, please contact our Support team for assistance.
- If the DSL light on your modem is solid, you should be connected and ready to go. Generally this is a green light but can also be blue or purple.
- Connect your device via WiFi and test your internet connection. As always, if you need help please contact us via chat at www.cmobile.com.au, call us on 1300 545 000 or email [email protected]

Cmobile NBN Fibre To The Premises (FTTP) installation
Cmobile NBN Fibre To The Premises (FTTP) installation
All types of nbn network connections that utilise a physical line running to the premises are considered Fixed Line connections. An nbn Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) connection is used in circumstances where a fibre optic line will be run from the nearest available fibre node, directly to your premises. FTTP connections require installation of an nbn utility box outside of your premises and an nbn connection box inside your premises. Cmobile will advise what needs to be installed and arrange an installation appointment for you if applicable. To check if your home is eligible for FTTP technology, enter your address on our NBN website page. This will return the type of NBN technology available.
What nbn equipment will be installed by the technician? An NBN technician will install equipment including: fibre cabling, an nbn utility box outside your premises, plus an nbn connection box inside your premises. Refer to the diagram below:

The nbn utility box outside your premises measures 250mm(w) x 260mm(h) x 80mm(d). The nbn connection box inside your premises measures 235mm(w) x 195mm(h) x 70mm(d).
- nbn fibre cabling will be installed from the street to the external nbn utility box. This can utilise existing cable pathways or include activities like mounting cable pathways on the surface of walls or using hand tools to shallow bury cable.
- The nbn utility box will be installed close to your existing telecommunications utility box, usually at the front of the premises, no lower than 400mm to the ground and clear from other utilities.
- The nbn approved technician will also install fibre cable between the nbn utility box and the nbn connection box.
Connecting your modem/router You must have a WiFi modem/router for a fibre connection. If you already have a router, make sure it is unlocked from your previous ISP so you can connect to the Cmobile network. Your router must have a plug at the back with WAN port. If you need a new modem/router, Cmobile can provide one to you. Simply contact our support team on 1300 545 000 or email [email protected] and we will be happy to assist you. Use an ethernet cable to connect the NBN connection box UNI-D port to the WAN port on your router. Normally we will use UNI-D port 1 but we will advise you if this is different. Power on your router and you should see your WiFi network appear and be connected. You can also connect any equipment such as a laptop or smart TV via ethernet cable from the Ethernet ports on the router to your equipment.
Cmobile NBN Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) installation
Cmobile NBN Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) installation
All types of nbn network connections that utilise a physical line running to the premises are considered Fixed Line connections. An nbn Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) connection is used in circumstances where the existing ‘pay TV’ or cable network can be used to make the final part of the nbn network connection. In this circumstance an HFC line will be run from the nearest available fibre node, to your premises. HFC connections require an nbn network device to be installed at the point where the line enters your home. This device requires power to operate. To check if your home is eligible for NBN HFC technology, enter your address on our NBN website page. This will return the type of NBN technology available.
What speeds can I expect on NBN HFC? You can typically get a high-speed connection on HFC, theoretically up to 1000Mbps download. However, actual speeds can be influenced by factors such as the quality of the HFC cable, distance from the NBN node and the number of devices connected at once. Contact us to discuss your speed requirement and we will check your service to determine what speed you can expect.
NBN HFC Installation You may already have NBN HFC equipment installed in your home. If this is the case, the switch to Cmobile is easy. You can identify this if your home already has the black NBN connection box as per the diagram below. If your home requires a new installation, there are two ways NBN HFC can be installed at your premises. An NBN approved installer may be required to connect the NBN box or it may be possible to do this yourself. Cmobile will contact you to let you know which option applies to you.

Connecting your modem/router Your modem/router needs to be connected from the black NBN connection box via an ethernet cable. One end of the ethernet cable should be plugged into the UNI-D port of the black NBN connection box. This is normally UNI-D 1 port, but we will instruct you if this is different. The other end of the cable should plug into the WAN port on your router. Make sure the power is now switched on to the black NBN connection box, and your router. After a couple of minutes you should see the Internet light illuminated on your router. This means your router is connected and ready to go. If not, please contact us for assistance. How to install Fixed Wireless at your home
Contact Cmobile to confirm if you require Fixed Wireless equipment to be installed at your home or if you have existing equipment that may require an upgrade. If your existing equipment is OK, the process to switch to Cmobile is fast and easy. Your home requires an outdoor nbn antenna, normally situated on your roof or under the eaves. It is normally situated on the main premises, but can also be situated on another building with access to power such as a shed or garage. There is also cabling required from the antenna into the home which connects to an indoor nbn connection box. The indoor nbn connection box requires power so is normally situated close to a power
point. Refer to the diagram below:

If you require installation, the below video is a guide to what you can expect.
Connecting your modem/router
You can bring your own WiFi modem/router to connect to Cmobile Fixed Wireless or you can purchase a new one from Cmobile outright. Your WiFi modem/router will be connected to the indoor nbn connection box. The first step is to locate your indoor nbn connection box. It should look like the below image.

This connection box is associated with your home and should never be moved to another premise. If you move home, the nbn connection box should remain but you can take your WiFi modem/router. The rear of the nbn connection box will have connections like the below:

Make sure your nbn connection box is powered on, and the GREEN Outdoor Unit connection point cable is securely plugged in. You should notice the POWER, STATUS and ODU lights on the front are GREEN. You should also note the SIGNAL STRENGTH light on. You need at least a RED light to indicate low signal strength to connect to the service. If the lights are not green or if you have no signal light, please contact Cmobile support for assistance. The diagram below represents the lights and what they mean:

Once the nbn connection box is powered on and connected, you are ready to connect your WiFi modem/router. Connect your WiFi modem/router to the power point and turn it on. Next, take your ethernet cable and connect one end to the UNI-D port on the back of the nbn connection box. This is usually UNI-D1 but we will advise you if we are using a different port. Connect the other end of the ethernet cable to the WAN port of your modem router. This could also be labelled at INTERNET or WAN. After a minute or two, you should notice the lights on your WiFI modem/router green or blue (depending on your router). This means the device is connected and ready to go. You can connect your devices via WiFi or from an ethernet cable from the LAN ports on your router to your computer, TV or other device.

What is my AVC or SMA ID?
From April 2025, all NBN service providers require your AVC or SMA ID to transfer your service from your current service provider to your new provider, e.g. to Cmobile. This helps eliminate NBN services being transferred or cancelled incorrectly and helps maintain a smooth connection experience.
AVC ID is required for NBN Fibre and Fixed Wireless connections.
SMA ID is required for NBN Sky Muster connections.
An AVC is also known as Access Virtual Circuit Identifier and an SMA ID is also known as Sky Muster Access Identifier. They are a unique 15-character reference (displayed as AVC000123456789 or SMA000123456789). This identifier is provided by NBN and is used by internet service providers like Cmobile to identify an active NBN connection at your address.
You can find your AVC or SMA ID on your bill from your current service provider to provide to Cmobile before we transfer your service. If you’re currently a Cmobile NBN customer, your AVC or SMA ID will be displayed on your Cmobile bill, or in your My Cmobile online portal account.
